The 37th chapter of Psalms tells us that the LORD directs our steps and delights in every detail of our lives. Even though we stumble, we will never fall because he holds us by the hand. It is like when you teach your child to ride a bicycle. They don’t naturally just hop on and go. You start them off on training wheels. Even then, the child wants you right by their side to walk with them as they pedal forward.
Eventually, you remove the training wheels and walk with them as they try to ride the bike. They’re going to fall and get scrapes and bumps or bruises along the way. But before long, they will sail along as riding the bicycle becomes as natural as breathing. Doesn’t it give you great delight, as a parent, when you see the expression on your child’s face when they pedal off on their own? But don’t you also worry about the falls that you know will inevitably come? You’re always ready to be right there to pick them up, mend their wounds, put them back on the bicycle, and send them off again.
God watches over us and makes firm every step that we take. If you would like to have him direct your way, then seek his advice before you step out. He will walk with you each and every step. Though you stumble, you will never fall, for the LORD holds you by the hand.
