Veterans come from all backgrounds and generations and walks of life. The differences are so varied and too numerous to list here, but one thing all veterans have in common is commitment. Their commitment may come from different places or be emphasized in different areas, but they are committed to the overall idea of service to their country. Each veteran knows that they may be called upon to place themselves in harm’s way at some point during their service.
While a military commitment may be for a period of a certain number of years, God asks us for an eternal commitment to him. He sent his one and only Son, Jesus, to make the ultimate sacrifice for you and me. Talk about commitment! He paid the penalty for our sins, a debt that we owed that we could never pay. He did not owe it, but he paid it. All he asks for in return is a commitment from us to give our hearts to him, believe in his Son, and repent of our sins.
I know, first-hand, how good it feels to be thanked for my service. Take the time, when you see a veteran, to thank them for their service. It really does mean a lot to them. Take the time to ask them their story and then listen. They’ve earned your time because they gave our country theirs. And then think about the sacrifice that God made for you and thank him for that. Pray for our veterans and lift them up as our military are still serving in hostile locations worldwide. God bless our veterans, not just today, but each and every day!
